The year was 1921. It was the year in which Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize, not for relativity but for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect. Einstein would deliver a lecture on his theory of relativity on April 2nd of 1921. Additionally, Northern Ireland would elect its first parliament on May 24, 1921 and after 84 years of British control, Afghanistan would achieve sovereignty on May 27, 1921. What you may not be aware of is that on Friday, May 27, 1921 Alma June Bartet graduated from Leon Godchaux High School at 7:15 P.M. in the School Auditorium. Her class motto was, "With the ropes of the past we ring the bells of the future." Her class colors were green and white and the class flower was the marechal niel rose. She was one of thirteen graduates and she was ninteen years old. The following photos are digital images of the commencement program found among photos once owned by her Aunt Octavia Robert.

There is more to this well preserved commencement program, but we'll be posting all of it on the website soon. Please share your memories and photos of Aunt Alma June Bartet McCurnin with us!
